The Delphi Urn Planter Collection

A planter collection inspired by ancient Greco-Roman culture, these pedestal urn planters take on the look of relic pottery but are made using durable modern materials. They have a chalice or goblet shaped silhouette, a balanced pedestal, and a wide bowl that can accommodate a large arrangement of plants or flowers.

What to Plant in Urn Planters

Urn planters, with their elevated, ‘off-the-ground’ design lend a sense of formality to private gardens and public outdoor spaces. For a cheerful look, opt for a variety of annual and perennial blooms of different colors and textures. For minimalism with flair, go with a mix of tall willowy grasses and wispy trailing plants. Or if farmhouse chic is the aim, urn planters with one type of a large blooming plant like hydrangeas is a great choice.

Mixing & Matching by Plant Height: Mixing upright, filler and cascading spiller plants can create spectacular arrangements in any planter. This arrangement style is commonly known as “Thrillers, Fillers and Spillers.” For this type of planter display, you'll need to pick at least 3 different varieties of plants. Be sure to keep in mind climate zones, and where the urn planters will be placed - sun or shade.

Thrillers: Finding the Focal Point - Begin planning a Thriller, Filler and Spiller display by choosing an upright, bushy "focal point" plant.  Focal point "thriller" plants are typically placed in the center of a pedestal urn planter. Popular selections include:

  • ‘Tuscan Sun’ Perennial Sunflower
  • Aztec grass
  • Dracaena
  • Ferns
  • Hydrangeas
  • Iris
  • Lily of the Nile
  • Majesty palms
  • Purple fountain grass

Next Up: The Filler -  This can be a single plant type or a mixture of several different species. Some tips from the pros are to avoid darker colors, avoid flowers with short bloom lives, know that bright colors can make an urn planter look larger, and choose flowering plants that can be pinched back. There are many options on fillers for urn planter arrangements. You can go with something like:

  • Caladiums
  • Coleus
  • Moss
  • Pansy
  • Petunia
  • Portulaca
  • Rosemary
  • Sweet Alyssum
  • Sweet Carolines

The Spillers: They seem a detail that can go unnoticed, but spiller plants lend a gauzy softness that gives pedestal planters a slightly untamed, but finished feel in terms of plant life. When deciding on these plants, most any cascading plant will do. Popular spillers for urn planters are:

  • Bacopa
  • Creeping Jenny
  • Fig ivy
  • Ivy
  • Sweet potato vine
  • Trailing lantana
  • Trailing rosemary
  • Vinca Vine
  • Weeping junipers

Where to Place Urn Planters

Delphi Urn Planters are a minimalist take on an old world Greco-Roman design. They have a classic look that fits in with any decor. For this, they look great as part of both commercial or residential gardenscapes.

These cast stone urn planters look impressive when placed on pillars. Perfect for hotel or spa  entrances. Or when planted with palms, they can add movement and freshness to bistros, cafes and other eatheries. When spiral topiaries are placed in cast stone urns, they transform boring front doors into dramatic residential entryways.

The polished, elegant design of our Delphi Collection gives these planters a versatility that makes them perfect for many different applications.

Made with Commercial-Grade GFRC

Delphi urn planters are made from GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete). A material that offers the best of both worlds - versatility and durability. Commercial-grade GFRC is flexible enough to be forged into classic contours that create the Delphi Urn Planter, as well as many of our other commercial planters. GFRC is also supremely durable as it was designed to resist cracking, chipping or breaking.

Additional Options

Greco-Roman contours define the urn plantersin our Delphi Collection. Inspired by antique pottery, the Delphi urn planters feature a substantial pedestal base, lustrous stoneware finish and a chalice-like silhouette that harks to ancient times.

Delphi’s design is aesthetically very versatile – this is a pedestal urn planter that will look great anywhere - Tuscan interiors, coastal cottages, and even minimalist mansions. It’s this versatility that makes the Delphi a popular planter among commercial landscape architects, interior designers and home residents alike.

This graceful pedestal urn planter may look like breakable potteryware, but it’s actually very tough. That's because the Delphi is made with cast stone - a mixture of natural sands, glass fibers, cement and other components. Cast stone is moldable at first, and becomes durable when finished, making it an excellent building material for outdoor planters. The finished product in this application looks like genuine pottery ware, but this is one cast stone urn planter that won’t shatter to bits. So whether these planters will go to Philadelphia, Atlanta or LA, they’ll not only look great, they’ll withstand the outdoor elements for years to come.
