Patent 523 Seattle Apartment Building
The Patent 523 Apartment building, located in the North Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, is in the heart of the city. With a rooftop garden that has a view of the city's impressive skyline, including Mt. Rainer and the Space Needle, it is a popular common area for apartment residents. So when we at Planters Unlimited were tasked with creating a custom, brand-based planter to act as a statement piece for their rooftop garden, we were excited to get started.
To match the apartment's architectural style and the surrounding design elements, we started with a 60" tall Modern Fiberglass Planter in an aluminum ArmoreCoat finish. Both the planter's monolithic shape and metal design suggested strength and security, while its streamlined shape complemented the apartment building's modern style. And the real metal ArmoreCoat finish gave it the same look as a solid metal planter, but without the additional weight and expensive cost. Since the planter's core was made from fiberglass, it was also lightweight enough to move and yet durable enough to withstand Seattle winters without suffering from moisture or weather damage.
Once we had the right planter to match the style and application of this project, we used a laser cutter to make a cutout of the Patent 523 logo. We then further customized it by adding LED light strips to the inside, creating a backlit effect for the logo cutout. The added lighting created a high-contrast, eye-catching design effect while at the same time serving as day and night illumination for the rooftop garden area. These lights came with a color controller so that our client could change the color of the lighting as they pleased, such as during seasonal changes and holidays.
