The Beverly Hills Open Air Dining Case Study showcases how the City of Beverly Hills, in collaboration with LOHA Architects and Planters Unlimited, transformed its temporary pandemic-era dining initiative into a permanent, design-forward urban solution. The city’s OpenBH program was reimagined through the creation of custom modular parklets that meet stringent safety, aesthetic, and operational standards. Planters Unlimited engineered and fabricated impact-resistant barrier systems - many of which double as planters - designed to integrate seamlessly with the city’s streetscapes. These components were freestanding, customizable, and compliant with city codes, offering flexible configurations for businesses while elevating the pedestrian experience.

Through detailed collaboration with LOHA Architects and city officials, Planters Unlimited delivered tailored parklet solutions for high-profile sites like The Cheesecake Factory and Ferrarini Cafe. Each installation demonstrated the adaptability of their modular system, incorporating custom finishes, forms, and integrated features such as screens, lighting, and branding. The success of Beverly Hills' semi-permanent parklets, launched officially in March 2024, has earned praise from city officials, businesses, and the public alike. With proven manufacturing precision and scalable support, Planters Unlimited now offers other cities and businesses a turnkey model for transforming outdoor dining into a long-term, community-enhancing asset.
