Bioretention Planters for Storm Water Management

Rain brings much-needed renewal to the environment, but in cities with limited green space, it can overwhelm drainage systems and carry pollutants into waterways. Innovative solutions like bioretention help manage stormwater by filtering runoff and supporting healthier urban ecosystems.

  • Effective Stormwater Management: Slows the flow of stormwater discharge to prevent overwhelming drainage systems
  • Pollution Mitigation: Filters out sediments and pollutants, protecting streams, lakes and oceans from contamination.
  • Rainwater Retention and Filtration: Captures rainwater to reduce runoff and improve water quality.
  • Customizable Solutions: Tailored designs to meet unique project requirements for the optimal performance and aesthetic integration.
  • Innovative Design: Our Bioretention Planters combine function and form, leading in sustainable urban landscape solutions.

The Stormwater Runoff Process

Specific processes vary depending on the nature and scope of your project. Typically, rainwater runoff flows from a non-absorbent surface, like a roof or overhang, into the planter. The water flows through the filter media (soil), trapping pollutants. The filtered water pools at the bottom of the planter, percolates into perforated drain pipes, and exits the stormwater planter.

Bio Retention Planters can be made with raw corten steel (weathering steel) or powder-coated steel, both offering unwavering durability.

Frequently Asked Questions

These unique planters feature an engineered system for managing runoff, whereas conventional planters just allow water to pass through. Our stormwater planters include internal components that capture and filter excess rainwater. This water is then slowly released into the planter’s soil to hydrate the plantings, with extra water draining away via an incorporated exit pipe.
When downspouts discharge water directly onto pavement or soil, it’s often at a high volume. Water flows too quickly out of the downspout to soak in. This can cause:
  • Soil erosion
  • Foundation damage
  • Hazardous puddling
  • Storm drain clogs
With a planter that manages stormwater, downspout discharge is captured and filtered. The water is then either absorbed or gradually moved away from the site.
Yes. Think of these modern planters as temporary storage tanks for large volumes of water. They reduce the speed and force of stormwater moving across a site and help mitigate pooling or flooding. Because they slow and manage heavy rainflow, they aid in preventing municipal drainage systems from failing during intense storms.
In a purely industrial setting, collection tanks or barrels can also contain excess runoff. But they’re not very attractive in shopping plazas, commercial courtyards, or other public-facing spaces.
Stormwater planters control excess water while visually enhancing their surroundings. Attractively designed bioretention planters like those made by Planters Unlimited integrate seamlessly into the overall aesthetic of a space, acting as both infrastructure and decor.
We craft our bioretention planters from the same materials – and with the same design options – as our most popular commercial outdoor planters. This makes it easy to feature consistent themes, finishes, and colors throughout your site.
Absolutely. In addition to our standard size and finish options, Planters Unlimited can manufacture stormwater planters in the dimensions your project requires. We can color-match to your desired color scheme and even incorporate logos or other designs. Just reach out for a quote.
